Despite my best intentions, I have had trouble finding time to keep this blog updated while trying to make progress on the car, write some posts for Wired's Autopia blog, keep my day job, and not neglect my family.
In the meantime, here is an an index of my Wired.com posts, which should get you up to date. You can also check out the many photos of my project in this flickr set, many of which are commented.
I've got plenty to write about, I'll see about getting around to doing it!

Today was my first exposure to your project, and I'm already inspired. Broke, but inspired.
ReplyDeleteI will modestly interject that I do have a lot of the mechanical and craftsmanly background that it sounds like you lack. I say this for two reasons...
-It's all the more inspiring that you're able to do everything that you are on this project if you're really as inexperienced as you say.
-I want to stress that you take care of that pan. I understand budget issues. But the pan is essentially the frame of the car. Your successes thus far have proven that you either have what it takes, or probably have friends that can help you through the critical parts. As you said, VW bugs are notoriously simple. EVERYTHING bolts on and off.
I'm not saying that it will be easy. But I have experienced so many projects where I neglected some fundamental underpinnings at an early stage and had to later undo all of my previous work to go back and fix my mistakes.
I readily admit there are more holes in my theory that you can do this than there are in your car's pan. But reading about the issue gives me an all-too-familiar feeling in my belly when I think about it.
I really want to see this project completed and running with flying colors. And I hate to be the bearer of such advice... I never liked hearing it myself.
Whichever way this goes, well done, and keep up the good work.
Congrats on the test run, is the end in sight, or is it the beginning?
